Knife-Wielding Man Shot By Newark Police: Prosecutors

A 22-year old Newark man was shot by police on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 28 after he threatened them with a knife, police said.

Quadir Harvey suffered non-life threatening injuries in the shooting, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said. 

At 5:30 a.m., Mercer County detectives attempted to execute an arrest warrant for Harvey on the 100 block of Camden Street, but Harvey barricaded himself inside his residence, armed with a knife Stephens and Fontoura said.

The Essex County Sherrif's Tactical Response Team responded to the scene and at 11:30 a.m., entered Harvey's apartment to apprehend him, Stephens and Fontoura said. Harvey refused repeated commands to comply with officers and an officer shot him after he threatened them with the knife, Stephens and Fontoura said.

Harvey was taken to University Hospital in Newark, Stephens and Fontoura said. He was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, and issuing a terroristic threat.
